Quest #165 - Notable Quoteable DQVIII 3DSable

Recommended Posts

We've had this quest more than a couple times, but with new playable characters and new scenes, it's time to hear all those wonderful punny new jokes!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to identify some of the most interesting or funny quotes that come across while playing the newly released Dragon Quest VIII 3DS game. Truly, the series has a veritable gold mine of classic lines and witticisms, and I'm sure this game will keep it up.

Each quote that is submitted must provide a bit more info than just the words that are spoken. We also need context. As such, submitted quotes should include:

1) The quote itself (obviously)
2) Who said it
3) To whom it was said (if applicable)
4) Under what circumstances did the quote take place

DQ8_22.png

For example, for the above pictured quote, you could submit something like the following:

"Me? Hearing my name is enough to make anyone wet their knickers!"
- Spoken by Yangus to King Trode as the party tries to pass across "Yangus' bridge".

And what would any quest be without some good old fashioned ground rules? So here they are!

Rules:
*** 0) No reusing ones that are already in our Notable Quotable Database.  CHECK HERE before you submit!!! ***
1) You may submit up to 5 quotes that will get voted on each (you know, like one every 15 hours of gameplay).  Please feel free to submit as many as you want extra so that Woodus has a great deal of them for our Quote of the Day here.  Only your Top 5 - and you can change these until the quest ends, count.
2) You can only submit quotes from the English version DQVIII 3DS
3) In the event that two or more people submit the same quote, the first person to submit it will get to claim it for their top 5.
4) Submit your quotes right here.  Please put all of yours in the same post.  I'm not going to track them down.
5) You have until March 31st, 2017 to contribute your submissions (seems like a long time, but this is a loooooong game).

Once all of the submissions have been gathered, the community will vote on which ones are the best. The three people who submit the top three quotes will receive a badge. Furthermore, all submitted quotes will be used by Woodus to update the "Quote of the Day" feature here at the Den.

That's it! Start your engines and get those hilarious or interesting quotes sent in!

Cool! I saved a few from my playthrough of the PS2 version? I doubt they would have been altered at all in the 3DS version but can those be accepted as well?

Should all the current Dragon Quest 8 quotes be added to this contest? I'll keep an eye out for new ones, but I don't want to waste a submission on a quote that we already have for the game.

I don't mind (mainly due to logistics and knowing myself I won't check anyway), but I wonder if we have an ordered list somewhere...

True.  I don't know if we should just accept all.  It's not like this got a totally new translation or anything.

Let me consult with Woodus.

I've got the first one of the contest here.

1. "It's a book entitled 'The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Criminals'. It explains techniques for committing a variety of petty crimes, including...the 'dine and dash', 'advanced loitering', 'cow tipping', and more. Nothing appears to be useful...at the moment." - A book found in a house in Pickham.

2. "I've got it! We should find the Princess a nice 'orse-faced bloke wiv goofy teeth an' a long nose! It's the perfect solution!" - Yangus in a party chat after picking up Charmles, but before completing the Royal Hunting Grounds.

3. "It's a closed world, the church. Believe me, beyond the locked doors, you'll find a squalid quagmire of ambition, bribery, and cruelty. But you should know that by now. You've been traveling with me long enough, haven't you!?" - Angelo during a chat after witnessing two guards speak ill of Marcello at Savella Cathedral.

I had two geared up but I guess my screenshots of the first one is gone? Oh, well. Here's the second one:

"Sex appeal refers to your ability to use your inherent beauty and feminine charm to your advantage. As this skill increases, so too will your ability to charm enemies into forgetting to attack you and the party. At the highest levels, you will also learn a variety of sultry and seductive dance techniques. Namely... The Hustle Dance! C'mon, everybody, let's do the Hustle! Ahem! Excuse me..." - a woman in the Seaview Church explaining skills, namely Jessica's sex appeal skill

"I was plannin' on goin' to the abbey and changin' me ways, like... Seems it might be Fate that's stopped the ferry runnin', eh!? I'm 'earin' the voice o' the Goddess tellin' me not to bother wiv all that and to just continue the ol' life o' crime!" - a thief in Port Prospect

"It's nice to come here and see the beautiful Princess in her true form. one of my favorite pastimes is looking at beautiful women." - Angelo, after taking Medea to the Mystical Spring

"Red's a very beautiful woman, but she's a touch too prickly for my liking. I enjoy a conquest as much as the next man, but breaking down the doors of that particular citadel would require more than an attractive horse! I'll let another crusader lay siege to her." - Angelo, after meeting Red

"[Monster] performers her best puff-puff on Jessica! (Puff-puff, puff-puff...) But Jessica laughs triumphantly, having won the battle of the bulges!" - battle text when a monster performs a puff-puff on Jessica

The last one I'm not 100% confident I wrote down accurately. I encountered it once and tried to duplicate it by battling monsters that perform puff-puffs, but none of them attacked Jessica with it. I'll fix it up if I encounter it again and I'm proven wrong, but I know what I saw and it looks like it's being backed up based on a quick google search confirming it.

List right here:

http://www.woodus.com/den/resources/notable_quotables.php

I asked about it during the VII contest and Woodus shared the link to it. It might be worth attaching to Quest details whenever one of these crops up.

OK.  So they are easily searchable.  I'm going to say NO REPEATS (changed the rules to show that).  We'll try to Police that well.

Thank you eal and Woodus!

Welp, I'm about halfway in.

...Expect a lot of mine to be Angelo.

Like in the DQ7 contest, US Eastern Time.

Entries:

1/25 19:52

"OLD?! Speak for yourself! You're looking at the Goddess's gift to womankind! Her YOUNG gift to YOUNG womankind!" - Angelo to Yangus, after the latter suggests Jessica left because she was sick of travelling with "stinky old men"

1/25 21:00

"Alexandra's... statue... Hey, 'ang on a minute! Guv! I've got it! Wot 'ave I got?! Hmm... I ain't sure yet, but it's gonna be good!" - Yangus to the hero, in a Party chat in the Tower of Alexandra when looking for the Kran Spinels

1/29 11:36

"I'm fairly sure I've mentioned this before, but... I HATE THIS TOWN! I swear it's bad for my complexion, and LOOK AT MY HAIR! Ugh! It's making me feel ill already!" - Angelo in party chat in any random return trips to Pickham

1/30 19:09

"So we climb all this way and finally reach the top, only to be greeted by a monster ugly enough to turn milk sour. I fail to see the appeal of mountaineering." - Angelo in party chat at the tip of the Dark World's Godbird's Eyrie, prior to fighting Gemon.

2/5 9:04

"The climb up to the nest is hardly what you'd call a gentle stroll. Why have you dragged us all the way up here, anyway!? We're not mountaineers, you know!" - Angelo in party chat in Light World Godbird's Eyrie

Extra:

1/29 11:22

"Farewell, my friends. Remember, together it is possible to break even an elm. Together you can overcome even the strongest evil." -Marta, before she gives herself up to Evil Sir Leopold.

2/1 5:36

"The pages of this book are filled with squashed insects. [Character] grimaces and quickly replaces the book on the shelf." - Bookshelf in the Black Citadel

1/25 18:48

"By the Goddess! [Hero]! Look behind you! Oh, no! WATCH OUT! Ha ha! Made you look! Anyway, didn't that shock loosen you up a bit? Help you relax?" -Angelo in party chat, within the Dark Ruins prior to the Dhoulmagus fight.

Augh! No! There was a perfect quote in Ascantha that I wanted to share but it's only a one-time party chat conversation between Jessica and Angelo. I can't get it to reappear. It's between two people but even if it wasn't eligible it would still be funny to share.

This is probably part of the exchange if I'm thinking of the same one eal is:

http://www.woodus.com/forums/index.php?app=gallery&image=863

That line is said by Jessica during a brief back and forth with Angelo when taking Ishmari to help King Pavan (or right when you enter the Moonshadow Land for the first time). She mentions a line, Angelo asks if he can provide service, then she responds with the above.

Also hooray for a callback to the meme contest we had quite a while ago.

Similar. She says it immediately after seeing King Pavan crying on his thrown and talking to Emma.

(This is NOT one of my entries)

I'm guessing this won't count towards my quotes considering this is a conversation, but I have to share it anyway. This is what happens if you go back to Argonia after Charmles has left to reach the Royal Hunting Grounds and speak to Angelo:

Angelo: Poor Princess Medea. Even if she's freed from this curse, she has to marry that awful Charmless.

Jessica: If I were the Princess, I'd rather stay as a horse than marry that guy!

Yangus: I've got it! We should find the Princess a nice 'orse-faced bloke wiv goofy teeth an' a long nose! It's the perfect solution!

Angelo: How is that perfect!? A horse can't marry a human, you idiot!

Just pull a part of that convo. I did, as you'll see up above. Also, that convo can trigger anywhere, as I got it at...Neos or Pickham. I forget where I Zoomed to.

Got all my entries together! Ended up quoting Angelo more then I expected. Was also hoping for at least one dramatic one to throw in, but I just got such a good chuckle out of these ones I felt like I had to use them.

I knew Jessica was known for her boobs, but I didn't realize how...self-aware the developers were of them. There are so many references to her humongous boobs, it's almost off-putting.
