Greetings from Tokyo!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Long time DQ fan here, favorite in the series probably being 4, as I love Torneko. As you might have guessed from the title, I live in Tokyo, Japan, so it's pretty much Dragon Quest heaven around here. I'm originally from NYC, but I've been here in Tokyo the last, wow, almost 7 years already. In the time I've been here, my Japanese has gotten pretty good (at least in terms of input - reading and listening - still, after all this time, a bit shy to converse allllll that much), so it's a dream as a JRPG lover.

Started playing Dragon Quest X the day it came out a couple of weeks ago and am loooooving it (Level 18 Weddie Thief). My reading is holding up pretty well so far. The story and quests are easy enough to understand, so it's been pretty smooth sailing. (Now I just need more free time to actually play it!) Also have been working on Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D when I'm on the go. Bought a 3DS LL a few weeks ago, so it's nice and big now.

Otherwise, I play any and all JRPGS. Finished up Ni no Kuni on PS3 not long ago. Beautiful game, that. And played Persona 4 The Golden on PSVita before that. Also a big 1st party Nintendo fan. Really looking forward to Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario 3D, and Animal Crossing 3D this fall. (Although the recent New Super Mario Bros 2 was pretty terrible.)

Besides games, I teach international relations at a university here in Tokyo, and play the cello and the ukulele in (small amounts of) free time.

So anyway, that's me. Looking forward to talking some DQX. Thanks!

(By the way, that's my DQX character in my avatar pic. Aren't I cute? And slightly 12 years old looking...)

Welcome! Yes, we DQ fans that live outside Japan are very passionate. Several titles never released here are fan translated (I actually imported DQ5 PS2, ripped it, patched it, burned it, bought a swap disk, and am currently playing it with my wife). My favorite series since my youth- DQ forever!

I don't know why you imported DQ5 (( Well, as long as you didn't buy it off Ebay or from a PERSON... ))...

But welcome, newguy! Let's all hope we get the Wii U version of DQX.

What's wrong with ebay? As for me buying it, its a quick, clean easy rip. No torrents or such. And it looks great on my shelf.

Nice. I've never played DQ5 on PS2. Only Super Famicon and DS. Is it worth picking up? I often see it at used game stores for less than a thousand yen. Are the load times a bummer? I played DQIV on PS1 and that was the big issue with it.

Anyway, thanks for the welcomes :)

Dude, you so need to play 5 PS2. I'm lovin' it! The symphonic music is epic!

And loads times are minimal.

Oh, okay. I'll pick it up the next time I see it. It's about time I have a wife other than Bianca, anyway... :P

If it's for the fact you want the original copy? Fine. But don't think you're supporting the developer by buying it off eBay. :(

Welcome! PM me your in game name and ID and I will add you to my friends list! Today was a great day of DQX. Currently a level 27 (or is it 28, too tired to check) minstrel, Level 14 Priest, and level 14 Thief (I think. I really should double check).

Also I tend to do a lot of the translating around here, but I could really use a hand. Any help translating interviews and news would be extremely helpful.

Wow, you've been busy! I only just managed to register for the concierge service the other day, so I'm hoping I'll start leveling a bit more quickly using those power orbs. It's fun, isn't it, seeing how much grinding you can fit into the 30 minutes? Hoping to start a Pukuripo mage pretty soon, too. I'm kind of obsessed with how adorable they are, so we'll have to see what actually being one does to my sanity (or lack thereof).

Will PM my ID when I get home tonight...

Uhmm, if I had the $800 to fly to Japan I'd much prefer to give SE the DQ sales. Although since their Japanese DQ sales are sky high, it's not sending the message that buying an American or European copy would send. So why worry?

Example being- I don't really care too much for DQ Wars, but I was sure to download it to my DSi out of principle. If it was the Japanese version, I'd be far less concerened about bolstering the already super strong sales.

And as for Play-Asia and the ilk, I doubt they by direct from SE. I could be wrong, but I don't believe they support the developer directly. Correct me if I'm wrong. I just don't picture SE selling an American retailer a disc that says Japan only on the case.

Play-asia and the like don't bother me as much because they buy their stuff and sell it as a retailer. :)

Newguy, how is DQX's chat system? Do you need a keyboard itself?

Yes! I was there once. It's sort of cute and sort of super tacky. Cosplay in general sort of weirds me out, and Luida's Bar is really no different. Also it's in Roppongi which is pretty gross in and of itself. But I will say that Slime nikuman was pretty adorable :)

Thanks for the welcome. Will definitely keep updated. Have the day off tomorrow, so I see myself being up all night tonight. Am thinking of starting a second character. I'm really dying to be a Pukuripo... :D

Newguy here. You don't *need* a keyboard (especially if you're importing and don't speak Japanese :P ), but you basically need a keyboard. The in-game keyboard system is really frustratingly terrible. It would take forever to write even a couple of sentences. There's a whole list of pre-set phrases you can choose from like, "Wanna form a party?" or simple things like "Thanks!" or "Congrats!", but eventually you'll want to talk about specifics. "Looking for Lvl 20 and up people to kill the lizard boss with", etc.

Long story short: Yup, need a keyboard :)

Ok, and I take it the Wii supports a basic USB keyboard? Never had to use one on it before.

Yep. Though why go basic when you can have the Slime Keyboard?
