Contest # 43 - The Den Vinci Code

Recommended Posts

denvincicode-1.jpg

It's new contest time again and I tried to make this one a bit different to mix things up. This contest will have you solving puzzles and traveling to new worlds so it wouldn't hurt to grab a few herbs before you get started.

To win at this contest you must embark on a quest to collect four shards. Each of the puzzles provided will lead you to one of the four shards, if solved correctly. Once you have all four shards, send them to me (i.e. send the links to each shard) and I will place them in the pedestal for you. Once the shards are in place, I will tell you where the pedestal is and you can use it to travel to a mystical land. Knowing what awaits you on the other side is a privilege only available to those who find the shards (thanks to Woodus for designing the mystical land!).

RULES / GUIDELINES:

1) When you solve a puzzle and find the shard, send the link to me via PM (Don't post shard locations in this thread!)

2) Feel free to collaborate and share info on how to solve the puzzles, but keep in mind that doing so might mean someone else gets to the pedestal first

3) If you find a shard, this thread is a great place to brag about it! Be sure to rub it in other peoples faces (don't be mean, just competitive!)

4) If you need help, I'm not such a cruel person. If I feel a clue is warranted, I will post it in this thread for all to see

5) Links to shards are case-sensitive and should be lower-case for all puzzles

6) Have fun!

All intrepid explorers who find their way to the mystical land will be rewarded handsomely. You have until January 12th, 2010 to find the shards. Feel free to hunt for them in whatever order you like.

Here are the four clues:

*dies and goes to heaven*

I figured by your PM that it might be something of this nature. Most excellent!

I just figured out all but one. I'm having trouble on number 2...

EDIT; Nevermind, just figured it out.

The last clue is killing me! It'll take a few weeks for me to decode it.

Phew, all done!

Ahh, I love puzzles like this. Had fun with them, though the last one was a bit rough. All I can say to help, is try to slow it down a bit. Still took me a little while even doing that.

Hmm, makes me want to share this site for those that had fun with these, has some similar type puzzles, and some far, far harder ones that will frustrate you to no end. Compared to some of those, these are cake. =) Seriously, some of these are downright fiendish! I just wish it'd update with some more puzzles someday.

Damn! I didn't think anyone would get them all that fast!

There are a number of ways to decode that message. Some are faster than others...

Phew, all done!

That one was recorded at half the typical broadcast speed if you can believe it.

I'm amazed that 5 people have found all four shards already. This contests hasn't even been up for 24 hours yet! You people are good.

Believe it or not I was cooking and ate dinner in between clues. Hahaha. You'll have to make them harder next time! Like combining clue #1 and clue #3. That'll be fun!

I wanted to make it accessible to even the most dimwitted individual with an advanced degree in hyperbolic topology. Depending on how many others are able to solve this, I may do a harder version of this another time.

Just don't do the fourth clue again, it's cruel. While it isn't difficult in terms of figuring it out, it is a pain to rewind and relisten to get it just right :unhappy:

Other then that, this contest was a lot of fun.

Yes, unless you are a telegraph operator, solving that clue audibly is definitely a challenge. If only there was a way to visualize the sounds...

I tried to find a program to do so for me, but didn't have any luck doing so, so had to do it the semi-hard way. I couldn't imagine decoding from sound to letters in one step. Oy.

Good thing there's the trusty paper and pencil, which I'm going to try and use.

The ID3 tags of the MP3 file might contain some useful info...

They do. At least, they helped me.

Thanks tummai! I sent you the location of the pedestal, so you can go ahead and see where it leads.

Well I had fun with this one, great job King Zenith.

Next time I would suggest only showing the '*.png' part of the URL. I never even had to figure out the trick to #2 because I knew the rest of the URL and could just substitute those letters into the rest of it.

Also it would have been nice if 3&4 were more of a puzzle, rather than just being in a different language.

Thanks Kenshin! Yeah, the URL's were definitely limiting to this puzzle. I will think of another way to handle that if I rehash this idea later.

I had far more diabolical puzzles for 3 & 4 planned but I didn't give you Den folk enough credit to solve them. I would consider the contest a failure if no one could figure them out but next time I will know that's not a problem. I apologize for dumbing-down these puzzles.

Thanks for the useful feedback and for taking part in this contest!

Glad you liked it! And thanks for playing.

I'm having trouble with #1. I've got all of it except for the last part of the url. I just kind of "saw" the message hidden in there, if you know what I mean, but I never could decode the method to find it.
