Architecturally speaking, the game boards for both Super Famicom and SNES game are quite similar. Also, the CR2032 lithium coin cell batteries are very likely used in both games, since that would've kept production costs down during manufacturing. Replacing the battery would be no problem at all. What I am concerned about is the game not booting at all. Typically, when a battery is missing, the game will otherwise function normally, but will not allow new save date, or retain old save data. It's possible the game was designed to not boot without a functioning battery, but I'd have to test for that to be certain. At this stage, I can certainly do a battery retrofit, but I can't guarantee that would also fix the no-boot problem.

I'll leave it up to you how you'd like to proceed.

By the time I remembered this Sub-forum existed, I had already purchased another copy. However, Since I got the non-working copy for about $8.00, I was thinking I could get it fixed and sell it for a profit.

How much would this cost in a worst-case scenario?

For just battery replacement, that will cost $8.00. Keep in mind that I don't have the hardware to test the no-boot issue on a Super Famicom. However, I can verify proper current and voltage for the battery, using a multimeter. I can also check some other components on the board, to see if I'm getting readings that should be normal for a given part. With any luck, the no-boot issue is being caused by a dead battery, but I can't guarantee it.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed.

Thanks for your kind words, Slime Master. So...repair on SNES and N64 consoles, you say? Hmmm...I hadn't anticipated demand for such services. I'll tell you what - PM me with your current situation regarding either/both consoles, and I'll see what I can do. With all the repair/replacement parts available on the internet, there should be theoretically no reason why I couldn't work on those, in addition to other consoles as well. I may very well have to expand this operation of mine to accommodate console repair as well

Also, to Slime Master and everybody else out there on Dragon's Den: if you have any comments or questions, feel free to ask here as well. My intention is to satisfy a number of inquiries so that a general FAQ can be compiled by either myself or Woodus. Don't be shy, ask away!

What does the level and rank beside peoples name do and how do you increas it?

It is based on post number, but don't just spam the board with nonsense or "ok", "sure" posts just to get your counts up.

Query: the memory storage cards for the Sega Saturn weren't battery based, were they? Meaning there's nothing you could do for a nonfunctional Sega Saturn memory card?

The reason I ask is because the Saturn's internal memory is battery based, although it is a lot easier to replace than a battery backup on a cartridge.

Sorry for the delay; I haven't been visiting the Den much as of late. When I saw your post, I wanted to respond straight away.

After doing a bit of research, the Sega Saturn memory cards utilize a CR2032 lithium coin cell battery. This is a very common size, used in many different types of games and other electronic devices. The battery can certainly be replaced, though bear in mind that any save data that was on the memory card has already been lost. With a replacement, the card should function as good as new.

Hey, is Zenithian77 still around? I've got an SNES game that needs a new battery... actually it's been needing it for a while, but laziness to do anything about it has been prevailing my life on that matter. Also, are you still not taking requests for GB/C games? Many thanks.

He posted just the other day in his birthday thread, but is generally not around much anymore. He tends to respond to everything posted in this thread though, so I am sure he will be by to answer you before too long.

Failing that, you could shoot him a PM or even try his gal smoochiebear.

In other news, good to see you back again!

Thanks. :) I've lurked from time to time, but I just haven't really felt the need to post lately. I just recently beat DQVI for the first time so I guess I'm kinda getting back into the swing of things in the world of Dragon Quest.

Hey Rebel! I caught this yesterday, and I finally had the opportunity to respond now. I generally lurk around here now, but once in awhile, I might chime in with a comment or two about things. As for this thread, whenever I have questions or requests, I will always respond ASAP.

As for business, I'm still replacing batteries in games, and would be able to help you out with your SNES game. Regarding GameBoy or GameBoy Color games, I will do repairs on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes, the EEPROM chip on the game board stops working properly, so battery replacement wouldn't fix that problem. In other cases, the chip is fine, and save capability can be restored with a new battery.

Send me a PM with the specific game(s) you have on hand that you'd like repaired, and we'll go from there. Many thanks!

Ahh...the slime knights....I had some happy times as a member of their site. I remember writing something for one of their contests for the Dragon Quest Monsters, though I am not sure what exactly, but I felt pretty good writing that up.

That's probably why I recognize the name.
